The Aarhus Symphnic Orchestra was founded in 1935 as an extension of the orchestra of the Aarhus Theatre. Today the ASO comprises seventy-two professional musicians.

The core activity of the orchestra is the performance of symphonic concerts. In addition this, the orchestra gives a number of free Saturday Matinées, family concerts, chamber concerts as well as CD recordings form an important part of the activities of the Aarhus Symphonic Orchestra throughout the season.

In May 2007 the ASO moved into it's brand new concert hall the Symphonic Hall at Musikhuset Aarhus (Concert Hall Aarhus).
